Our philosophy

Making the research journey worth taking.

There is an incredible amount of knowledge out there, and exploring it should feel exciting and rewarding. We build AI that helps you discover new directions, understand difficult research, and grow more confident in your own thinking.

Why the journey matters

Exploring a new city by bike.

Set out for B. Ended up at F, by way of C and D.

When everything clicks

Anyone who has worked on a research project knows the feeling of being overwhelmed by how much is out there, until you stumble across that one paper or new line of thought that makes everything click. Or when you finally work through a difficult study and realize you can explain it to a friend. Moving from uncertainty to feeling curious, capable, and in control is one of the best parts of learning.

Exploring new paths

Real research and problem-solving are iterative. Like exploring a new city by bike, you move around, follow an interesting path, and notice connections you hadn’t considered before. Even seeing what isn’t relevant along the way paints a bigger picture of the field and often leads you to C, D, or F when you originally thought you only needed to go from A to B.

How we help along the way

Using AI to open up science, spark curiosity, and build confidence.

A partner for exploring and understanding

Because AI has a strong grasp of different fields and what research exists, it can be a great partner when you are exploring. We use it to help you brainstorm new avenues of search, find useful terms in unfamiliar subjects, and walk through esoteric, difficult-to-grasp documents in a way that makes them understandable and useful to you. With Keenious, you can even search into another language and have the AI translate it back to you, breaking down language barriers across science.

Opening up science for everyone

Just as importantly, we want to make research feel approachable for everyone and not just a handful of top experts. Whether you want a taste of what is out there on a new topic, advice on how to work through a paper, or a clear explanation of how the peer review process works and how to judge the quality of a study, our goal is to give you the tools to engage with the world’s knowledge while you stay in the driver’s seat.

How we think about AI

Getting the benefits of AI without building dependence.

AI helps you pedal. You steer.

The cost of taking the shortcut

A lot of AI tools today focus on productivity and automation, doing the work for humans so we don’t have to do it ourselves. That can be useful in many areas, but in science, education, and research, it comes with a quiet cost. It is like taking an underground subway that gets you to a stop as fast as possible, but when you come up you can’t describe how you got there. The more we hand over the process, the more we have to trust the machine, and the less we build up our own minds and critical thinking.

Keeping human judgment in the loop

When an AI reads everything on your behalf and makes the judgment calls on what to look into next, its own perspective and biases compound into the final answer. We don’t want a future where research is offloaded to a computer and people no longer understand the work being done. Instead, we focus on integrating AI so it builds people up and leaves you more curious and capable of discovering things on your own.

What we believe in

Four convictions that keep the human at the center of the research process.

Science belongs to everyone, not just specialists

There is so much knowledge in the world, and it shouldn’t feel locked behind academic jargon or language barriers. Making research accessible and understandable for anyone who wants to learn is one of the biggest wins we can work toward.

The best ideas come from following rabbit holes

Discovery rarely happens in a straight line. Looking around a field, stumbling across an unexpected paper, and even seeing what isn’t relevant gives you a real overview and sparks connections you wouldn’t have known to search for at the start.

AI brings things into view, you make the judgment calls

AI is great at surfacing research and helping unpack difficult material. Where we draw the line is having AI read everything on your behalf and decide what matters, which only compounds its own biases into the result.

Writing your own thoughts comes first

Formulating a thought and putting it into your own words is where real thinking happens. That is why we do not generate ready-to-submit finished work or automatically insert citations. After exploring a topic, you should be able to close your laptop and explain it yourself.
